THE CURRENT LANDSCAPE
According to a report by the World Health Organisation in 2017 it indicates that 1 out of 4 people who seek healthcare in Kenya have a mental health condition, depression and or anxiety alongside substance misuse. Noting, the young population in Kenya, the rise of mental health conditions is having a significant impact on the wellbeing of Youth ( REF: EClinicalMedicine, The Lancet, 2019).
In 2019, amongst 10–24 year-olds in Kenya, mental disorders ranked as the second leading cause of a disability ( REF :Lancet).
The demand for mental well-being support and services is on the rise. This comes at a time when financial pressures means investment into mental well-being is limited and workforce shortages means demand is outstripping support / services, (Lancet, 2019). A recent study in 2024, indicated that there are only 150 psychiatrists in Kenya. Most are based within Nairobi, the capital city. Outside of Nairobi, there is one psychiatrist per million population.
Moreover, due to cultural barriers, there is limited awareness of mental health and tools and ways to mental well-being. Low awareness, shortage of mental health professionals and high treatment costs is resulting in high suicide rates, poor mental health outcomes and a community where stigma against mental health continues.
IMPROVING MENTAL HEALTH THROUGH THE BREATH
Breathing techniques are effective for relaxation, stress management, and improving mental health, particularly in managing anxiety and depression. The SKY Breathing/Meditation technique uses rhythmic breath patterns to calm the mind and body. Research shows it reduces anxiety and stress, improving mental and physical well-being, and is a low-cost, self-empowering approach to enhancing emotional health. SKY technique have shown that SKY meditation / breathwork:
